The Romaqua Group Borsec ranks among Romania’s biggest beverage producers and is particularly successful in the water and beer sectors. Through its collaboration with Krones, the company is not only steadily adding more capacities but also coming ever closer to its ambitious sustainability targets. Krones is currently building two new lines for Romaqua.

Specifically, the two orders cover a PET line for filling 28,000 bottles per hour and a glass line handling both returnables and non-returnables rated at 25,000 bottles an hour.

    The PET line

Once commissioned, the line will be used to fill a wide range of still and carbonated mineral waters as well as soft drinks from the Romaqua product portfolio. Here, efficiency meets sustainability throughout the entire process chain. Optimised infrared heating technology in the Contiform blow-moulder reduces energy consumption during preform heating and is also suitable for lightweight preforms, thus enabling savings in PET consumption. Once blow-moulded, the bottles are passed to the Modulfill VFS which ensures accurate, hygienic filling. Its PFR valves permit stepless regulation of the filling velocity, so they can be optimally matched to a wide range of different product characteristics. That is particularly advantageous when processing carbonated or foaming beverages. The electronic control block in the valve ensures precise dosing and reduces compressed air consumption by 30 per cent. And the VarioClean CIP system also saves resources by providing fully automated cleaning processes and minimising cleaning-agent consumption.

    The returnable-glass line

Order number two relies on Krones’ expertise in non-returnable and returnable glass bottles. Bottles and crates are fed into the line by a Pressant Universal depalletiser and a Smartpac unpacker and then impeccably cleaned by a Lavatec E4 bottle washer and a Linajet crate washer respectively. Once the beverages have been blended in a Contiflow mixer , they are filled into glass bottles by a Modulfill HES . Romaqua has chosen an Ergomodul labeller and a Variopac Pro W wrap-around packer for dressing and packaging the containers.

A strong partnership with a bright future

Of course, the local sales team in Romania were very pleased that Romaqua chose Krones as its partner for upsizing its filling capacity. According to Sales Manager Razvan Edward Radoi, it is their long-standing and reliable cooperation and Krones’ technological leadership that Romaqua very much appreciates. “We know how important innovation, efficiency and sustainability are to Romaqua. Krones scores highly with almost unbeatable values for energy and water consumption at many points along the two lines. Not to mention Krones’ hygiene standards, which ultimately persuaded Romaqua to place another order with us.” Dan Dinu, Head of Krones Romania, adds: “This proactive expansion thrust was just the beginning for Romaqua. The company is constantly examining whether and how new Krones technology can help achieve its corporate goals.”

According to the company, its average energy consumption is already 80 per cent below the national industry average. Investing in two more lines with Krones kit enables the Romanian market leader not only to expand production capacities but also to improve consumption values yet again compared to the old equipment. And the short delivery times for both lines were another deal-clinching argument for Romaqua. The local team is confident: Krones und Romaqua, that’s a strong partnership with a bright future.

Heavyweight in the Romanian beverage industry

With a turnover of more than 170 million euros and around 2,000 employees in seven factories, the company is one of the country’s most important economic motors. Since its founding in 1998, it has been growing continuously – today, 24 production and filling lines are running full throttle, turning out more than one billion litres per year. In the Romanian city of Borsec alone, Romaqua provides jobs for almost 70 per cent of its residents, which means at least one member of each family works here, and each job creates 17 additional jobs in upstream and downstream industries.

Romaqua is particularly famous for the product that comes from this very city: Borsec, Romania's leading natural mineral water. The brand stands for purity and quality and regularly wins international awards. In the soft drinks segment, Giusto Natura offers natural, innovative drinks for health-conscious consumers. And those who like it hoppy are surely familiar with Albacher – Romaqua's beer brand, which is known for its high-quality ingredients and traditional brewing craftsmanship.
